You ve finally decided to take the plunge and book your gap year.

Below are some helpful tips to fund a gap year.

Working It Out

Face your fear and work out how much it is going to cost you to fund your gap year. We re talking food, accommodation, flights and all that. One thing to remember when you re working this out is that some Gap Year destinations cost more than others, so do a bit of research into the costs of the places you want to visit.

The Working Holiday

If you get yourself some paid work abroad, you don t need to save up as much money before you go. It can also seriously take the strain off your finances whilst you re travelling and help fund a gap year that s longer, better and filled with more of the things you want to do!

Budgeting

Doing little bits to save money here and there can make real difference to your money saving efforts, for example taking your lunch to work rather than buying it. You could also work out a monthly budget, giving yourself a certain amount of money to spend a week and putting the rest of the money in a separate saving account where you can t get at it!

Sponsorship/ Fundraising

If you plan to do volunteering on your trip then you can use sponsorship as a way to get the money together - you might be surprised at how willing people are to help you out:

- Ask your family, friends and work colleagues to sponsor you and to pass on the message to other people they think might sponsor you.
- Take part in a big event, such as a marathon or half marathon and get sponsored for that
- Sell cakes at work, get rid of your old stuff at a boot sale, wash cars and so on.
- Write a letter to your company s big boss to say what your doing and see if the company will sponsor you. Big companies like to get the good publicity that volunteering brings - it has been known in the past for them to double your final total.

The fund raising opportunities are endless, so get creative and you ll raise the cash you need to fund a gap year in no time! You ll soon been away chasing your dream.

Ontario, Canada is a beautiful province filled with many hidden secrets for those armed with a compass or GPS and a little spirit of adventure. With a history rich in logging, Ontario was the site of many lumber camps. Where wood was necessary to be shipped, mills were required to cut the wood. Where lumber camps were built, railways were needed to ship the wood out. Railways required steel, which in turn required mines to extract ore from the earth.

Today you can still find remnants of yesteryear. Old mills, railway lines, wood mills and mining plants are scattered across Ontario. In many cases they are nothing more than a pile of rubble, in other cases the adventurer may still walk through the original buildings.

Ontario Abandoned Places is a website devoted to the exploration of abandoned ruins across Ontario Canada. It was originally designed to cover ghost towns but has now branched out into abandoned urban locations for the Urban Explorer. The difference is locale. A ghost town explorer is interested in a rural town, which may be longer on the maps, or in jeopardy of falling off the maps. An Urban Explorer is interested in exploring city attractions, either abandoned or off limits to the general public.

Ontario Abandoned Places follows the golden rule of “Take nothing except photographs. Leave nothing but footprints.” Break and enter is forbidden, a pair of hiking shoes and a GPS unit are encouraged.

The website brings many visitors in search of information. For some it is information on a town that a relative grew up in, which is no longer in existence. For others it s the thrill of the hunt and then there are those who grew up in these towns, and merely want to see it as it once stood.

Take Burwash for example. The old prison closed down in the late 1960 s but still holds the occasional reunion where former townsfolk reunite to share stories, photographs and of course beer. They find Ontario Abandoned Places a valuable resource for information and photographs.
